Food-Safe Labels and Printing: Inks, Adhesives and Compliance for Direct Food Contact

Food-Safe Labels and Printing: Inks, Adhesives and Compliance for Direct Food Contact

August 26, 2026

Labels do more than carry a brand — on food packaging they sit close to the product, sometimes directly on the food, so ink migration and adhesive choice are safety questions as much as design questions.

What makes a label food-safe

  • Low-migration inks: inks formulated so components do not transfer to food beyond permitted limits
  • Appropriate adhesive: food-contact grade where the label touches the product, especially for produce and unwrapped items
  • Compliant substrate: face material and varnish suited to the food's temperature and moisture

Questions to ask your supplier

Request the ink system's food-contact documentation, migration test results for your specific application, and confirmation that the adhesive suits your substrate and storage conditions. For batch-control and date coding, removable labels must peel cleanly without leaving residue that could contaminate a container.

Printing that holds up

Flexo and rotogravure printing both work for food labels; the right choice depends on run length and colour complexity. Confirm the printer runs colour and registration checks during the run, not just at start-up.

We print self-adhesive labels and flexible packaging with in-house printing and quality testing. Contact us for label samples, ink compliance data or a factory tour.
